Pedestrians have said "about time" as Liverpool city council could be looking to crack down on pavement parkers.

Pavement parking is a major issue around Liverpool, and has been slammed as an "absolute joke" by people who find their daily lives in the city centre and further afield blighted by the inconsiderate parkers. Among those affected, the problem is perhaps most felt by parents with prams, people with disabilities and the elderly.

For some time now Liverpool City Council has promised to crack down on the issue, hiring more enforcement officers to fine offenders. But now the council appears to be considering more drastic action.

Details shared with the ECHO suggest the city council is exploring areas in which to set up a secure pound where the vehicles of persistent offenders could be seized and taken. It is understood the local authority is having conversations with a number of companies who could supply staff and vehicles to carry out these duties, although talks are said to be at a very early stage.

There have also been conversations with the council's enforcement agents about potential joint action days where vehicles of persistent offenders could be seized. The news has been welcomed by many, who said it is "about time" that plans are in the works to drastically tackle the problem.

On Facebook, Dawn Lyon said: "Should happen everywhere. [On the] pavements where I live people with prams and wheelchairs have to go on the road to get past. Why should they risk being on the road?"

Louise Bayley said: "There is a van by ours that needs this, as you can just about walk past it never mind [with] a pram or wheelchair."

Ged Copeland said: "If you're handicapped or blind you have no chance."

Commenting on the ECHO website, one reader 'hobgoblin' said: "All in favour of this. Especially after being honked at by a motorist on Rose Lane L18, simply because I was stood on the footpath where he wanted to park.

"No, I didn't move, nor would I expect anyone else to move for such ignorant, selfish behaviour."

Commenter 'ionacastle' said: "About time. They are a danger for the elderly and disabled. And break-up the pavement."

Commenter 'Iknowyou' said: "Great news. Let's hope they do this in residential areas. Some pavements are blocked by vans and mothers have to push prams in the road to get past." They added: "Inconsiderate and lazy people."
