Billions of WhatsApp users are set to notice a huge change when signing in to the massively popular messaging app.

WhatsApp is the most used messaging platform in the world, with more than two billion people using it regularly. The app is regularly updated and owners Meta are said to have just submitted a new update.

WABetaInfo reports WhatsApp will be widely rolling out a feature that allows users to associate an email address with their accounts.

This means people will be able to sign into the app with their email address as an alternative to using their mobile phone number. You would then need to click on a verification link sent to your email inbox in order to gain access to your account.

While a phone number would still be required to have a WhatsApp account the new login system could come in handy during situation where you could have difficulty receiving a two-factor authentication code via SMS - for example if you were travelling through an area with poor cellular connection.

The email feature is available in the current beta version of WhatsApp for iOS and Android, 2.23.24.10 but is expected to be rolled out more widely soon.
