A common item that costs around 80p and is found in most kitchens could be used to quickly de-ice your car, according to experts.

With temperatures now considerably colder than they were just a few weeks ago, quickly defrosting or demisting the car windscreen can be a chore. But it's one you should never skip - even if you're in a rush - as driving without clear visibility could be catastrophic.

Thankfully car experts from car GAP Insurance providers ALA Insurance have shared their cheap and effective (and unusual) hack to stay safe this winter.

The trick uses a simple cucumber. Callum Butler at ALA Insurance says the vegetable is a natural deterrent for moisture. He told the ECHO: "Cucumbers contain natural oils which create hydrophobic surfaces when rubbed on glass or mirrors. The water-repellent properties of cucumber help to stop your windshield from condensing and forming a fog.

"Essentially, it’s like giving your windshield a protective film that discourages condensation during the colder months."

By wiping a light layer over your windscreen, it is likely to take considerably less time de-icing the following morning. And the cucumber isn't the only household item said to help with the task.

Some people say they apply a layer of vinegar and water to their windscreen of an evening - because vinegar has a lower freezing point than water and this can stop ice forming on your car.
