Former cabinet minister Esther McVey has returned to government.

Rishi Sunak has reshuffled his cabinet today after Suella Braverman was sacked as Home Secretary. The Prime Minister has confirmed the new appointment as he tries to reset his Government before the general election, which is expected next year.

The Tory party has confirmed the Tatton MP, from Liverpool, will be the new minister without portfolio, who is likely to take a prominent role in the media. The 56-year-old was previously the work and pensions secretary under Theresa May's government.

Rishi Sunak said the Cabinet reshuffle had built a "united team". In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the Prime Minister said: "Today we have built a united team ready to deliver the changes this country needs for the long term.

"Professionalism, integrity and experience - this is a team that will be bold in making the right decisions for our great country, not the easy ones."

David Cameron also made his return to frontline politics when he was announced as the new foreign secretary earlier today . The former prime minister said on Monday he wanted to be "part of the strongest possible team" that "can be presented to the country when the general election is held".
