Merseyrail services were disrupted after a trespasser was pursued by police.

Train services on the northern line were disrupted due to a person being on the line near Liverpool Central. Merseyrail said the trespasser was being pursued by police.

Train services to Headbolt Lane were delayed as well as train services to Hunts Cross. Services to Ormskirk were also cancelled or delayed, Merseyrail said. Trains to Southport were delayed due to the incident.

It is understood services on northern lines returned to normal at 8.30am. In a reply to Merseyrail on X, formerly known as Twitter, one eyewitness said they saw a person trying to jump the line, take their clothes off and run down the tracks.

Merseyrail apologised to the eyewitness and said: "I'm sorry this had to be witnessed. Unfortunately, situations like this do occur and we try to respond and resolve these incidents as quickly and safely as possible."
