Paul McCartney has given fans of The Beatles a seven-day warning on social media.

Paul, 81, who grew up in Allerton, thrilled his his 4.25m Twitter followers with a rare update on Wednesday. The Liverpool legend has an upcoming photography exhibition at London's National Portrait Gallery.

Visitors will be able to see extraordinary photographs taken by Sir Paul for the first time ever.

The show focuses on "portraits captured by McCartney, using his own camera, between December 1963 and February 1964, a time when The Beatles were catapulted from a British sensation to a global phenomenon".

The never-before seen images will allow fans to step into Paul's shoes and view what it was like to be a Beatle at the start of Beatlemania.

The NPG website says: "At a time when so many camera lenses were on the band, it is Paul McCartney’s which tells the truest story of a band creating cultural history – in one of its most exciting chapters."

In a tweet, Sir Paul said: "The countdown is on! 'Paul McCartney Photographs 1963-64: #EyesOfTheStorm' opens at @NPGLondon in one week".

Beatles fans have rushed to reply. Joseph said: "This is going to be great" while Lucy said: "I'll be there on opening day!" Jan said: "This looks great and a happy belated birthday sir".
